Bindlestiffs Open Stage Variety Show is a non stop variety show experience that may include The Heavy Metal Magician, Kung Fu juggling, trained rats, clown bands, aerial artists, wire walkers, sideshow performers, stripping clowns, living cartoons, physical comedy, a cougar contortionist, emerging burlesque starlets, and more. The show celebrates works in progress, emerging artists, and professionals trying something new, this night promises many surprises.

The Trust Dance Company (Seoul, Korea) performers and musicians will be doing events in Amsterdam from Sunday December 4 until Sunday December 11. All of the events are in collaboration with Amsterdam-based musicians and dancers with varied themes for each project.

Rakesh started his career as a Bollywood dancer. Since 2003, he has been doing contemporary dance, and has been associated with Attakkalari centre for Movement Arts in Bangalore, India for 5 years. Rakesh has been working as an independent artist. He participated in the Apprenticeship Program with Magpie Umbrella Organization under the Direction of Katie Duck.
Since 2009 Rakesh has been invited as a contemporary dance teacher in many prestigious dance festivals and companies across India and Europe.

Fifteen years after it roped in Malayalee artistes for the hugely-successful Odysseus, Footsbarn Traveling Theatre of France is back in Kerala, this time with the Shakespearian play - The Tempest.

The Odysseus team would be part of The Tempest as well. “Footsbarn http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifplans to set the play in India and premiere it in Guimaraes, Portugal, in May 2012 and later [undertake] a European tour to Spain, France, England and other countries. The team will then return to India for performances in October,” D. Raghoothaman, founder-President of Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre, told Deccan Chronicle.

02 dec -- BIG BOSS
The most recent creation with Jango directing and performing with the company Passabarret from Valls Tarragona. Presenting a funeral, a circus and a wedding. Created as a moving street event with an all purpose gipsy car, the RAI version will be performed on stage.

09 dec -- NIGHTMIRRORS
Jango's original horror show with slide projections and a 3 piece band. In the RAI Jango will present the 'Haunted House', the 'Suicide', 'Stinky Stankovitch' and his cruel clothes and the epic, opera drama 'Rudolf and Valentina'.

Johnny Melville (was) appearing at the Girona Film Festival in early December to accept the Xavier Cugat Award and perform music for three days ...

This mashup "draws" Johnny Melville into one of Cugat's scenes from the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, where he led the orchestra for a couple of decades. There are four Marx brothers in the upper right corner, and a self-portrait of Cugat in the lower right.
Xavier Cugat (1900 - 1990) was born Francisco d'Asís Xavier Cugat Mingall de Bru i Deulofeu in Girona, Catalonia. He achieved fame as a violinist, caricaturist, and genial entertainer who specialized in Latin American Big Band Music.

(Above) New York City-born Abbe Lane was Xavier Cugat's lead singer for around ten years. After they split up, Cugat eventually hired a young performer named “Charo,” who became his most famous walking, talking, dancing caricature — whomever the real lady behind that act happens to be!

These classes will focus on a variety of contemporary dance techniques such as Release, Double Skin, Double Mind, Flying Low as well as partnering, improvisation and choreography.

Rakesh started his career as a Bollywood dancer. Since 2003, he has been doing contemporary dance, and has been associated with Attakkalari centre for Movement Arts in Bangalore, India for 5 years. Rakesh has been working as an independent artist. He participated in the Apprenticeship Program with Magpie Umbrella Organization under the Direction of Katie Duck.
Since 2009 Rakesh has been invited as a contemporary dance teacher in many prestigious dance festivals and companies across India and Europe.

Barsham Faire and Albion Faire, East Anglia UK

Following on from the success of the gathering at Diss on September 10, there will be held in Norwich, on Sunday November 20th, a meeting for those wanting to keep the Fairs Archive project rolling a while longer. The project currently consists of three existing parts and one potentiality:

The archive -- Held at Lowestoft Library. Wants looking after, from our side, by a couple of people in easy reach of Lowestoft. The Record Office staff are great but they only have so much they can do. If we want people to be able to easily look at the gathered materials we had best attend to its conditions of storage ourselves.
The digital photo archive is being tidied up and catalogued and the best pictures will be incorporated in the new website. Contributions welcome.

The website -- Currently being upgraded. It is being rebuilt using a content management system (CMS) called Plone. Straightforward to use, contributions and assistance welcome. Descriptions or impressions of individual fairs are especially appreciated.
The exhibition -- Having a rest under Madeline's spare bed. Shouldn't be allowed to get settled in. Venues and dates need sorting out. Publicity and launch events too. Improvements need looking at.

CONTEXT: Barsham Faire is where George-O first met Johnny Melville, which eventually led to Kaboodle and Salatka Balloon Band coming to Amsterdam's Festival of Fools.

Fifteen years after it roped in Malayalee artistes for the hugely-successful Odysseus, Footsbarn Traveling Theatre of France is back in Kerala, this time with the Shakespearian play - The Tempest.

The Odysseus team would be part of The Tempest as well. “Footsbarn http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifplans to set the play in India and premiere it in Guimaraes, Portugal, in May 2012 and later [undertake] a European tour to Spain, France, England and other countries. The team will then return to India for performances in October,” D. Raghoothaman, founder-President of Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre, told Deccan Chronicle.

The most recent creation with Jango directing and performing with the company Passabarret from Valls Tarragona. Presenting a funeral, a circus and a wedding. Created as a moving, street event with an all purpose gipsy car, the RAI version will be performed on stage.

09 dec -- NIGHTMIRRORS
Jango's original horror show with slide projections and a 3 piece band. In the RAI Jango will present the 'Haunted House', the 'Suicide', 'Stinky Stankovitch' and his cruel clothes and the epic, opera drama 'Rudolf and Valentina'.

Xavier Cugat (1900 - 1990) was born Francisco d'Asís Xavier Cugat Mingall de Bru i Deulofeu in Girona, Catalonia. He achieved fame as a violinist, caricaturist, and genial entertainer who specialized in Latin American Big Band Music. This mashup "draws" Johnny Melville into one of Cugat's scenes from the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, where he led the orchestra for a couple of decades. There are four Marx brothers in the upper right corner, and a self-portrait of Cugat in the lower right.

I am in Italy at a village called the land of laughs (Monte San Giusto) lots of clown madness happening -- Michael Christensen is here, Big Apple Circus founder ...

Monte San Giusto is a small village in the Italians mountains ... and they are crazy for clown. A huge red nose hangs off the clock tower, hundreds of houses hang balloons, clown effigies, puppets, colored windows, and everywhere people are hungry for the year's new crazies for the festival.

What's next for Johnny: November clown festival in Vitoria-Gasteiz, capital of Álava province in Northern Spain – and of the autonomous Basque region.

Webmaster Michael Visits Utah, and Meets Another Friend from Katie's Circle

The 8th International Festival of Dance for the Camera was held at the University of Utah from September 15 through 24. Filmmaker Katrina McPherson was the special guest, and she presented the American premiere of her film about Kirstie Simson called Force of Nature.
Kirstie and Webmaster Michael both had dinner at Katie Duck's house recently, but about a week apart. The coincidence was over-the-top fun! After Simson's movement workshop on Saturday, Michael introduced her to Ruth's Diner in the mountains just above the university -- where they drank espresso outside in the beautiful late-summer afternoon.
Michael took Kirstie back to Katrina's class in the dark recesses of the old Museum of Art, and they all met again at sunset, for the screening of Force of Nature at Fort Douglas, with the addition of lovely Mime Trouper Patsy Droubay!

Shout-outs to organizing professor Ellen Bromberg -- who was at my introductory RDT Dance/Video workshop in 1973, staffer Danielle Short, filmmakers Aaron London and Tanja London (See ya' in Amsterdam! OK?), 24-hour bus-riding student Candace, Joanne Woodbury, and Lynne Wimmer from RDT's greatest days.

Burning Man perseveres in the Black Rock Desert

Fire Goddess Crimson Rose at Burning Man -- we met her in 1974 at the International Mime Festival. Around 50,000 people will populate Black Rock City at the end of this summer, and the town will be gone by winter.

We have in recent years collected an archive on the East Anglian Fairs of the 1970s/80s. We have just been donated some pictures from Barsham 1975 including a small series featuring George and his 'little princess' ... are busy creating an exhibition at the moment ...

Barsham Faire is where George first met Johnny Melville, which eventually led to Kaboodle and Salatka Balloon Band coming to Amsterdam's Festival of Fools.
There is quite an active group documenting these East Anglian Fairs!
They made an informative Website,

Next year marks 40 years since the first of the legendary East Anglian fairs – which ran from 1972 to 1986 – took place. Their spirit of creativity, play and environmentalism was ahead of its time and has left a legacy today. The fairs became renowned for providing extraordinary theatre, music, installation art, artisan stalls and other entertainments, helping to establish the careers of many who have gone on to play an important part in the cultural life of Britain.
The first run of the East Anglia Fairs exhibition is now over. It had a cheery launch on the 4th August ... Maximum chatting, minimal speechifying. Madeline and Mike said a bit, about the archive and the forthcoming gig, and Don said a bit more and read an Andy Bell poem 'Dragon Hill'.

Next year marks 40 years since the first of the legendary East Anglian fairs – which ran from 1972 to 1986 – took place. The MAGPIE improvisation summer course runs for five weeks (July 18-20) with workshops by Katie Duck and Alfredo Genovesi 13:00-17:00 Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays. There are spaces for performers and musicians to study with Alfredo and Katie one or two weeks at time (100 euros per week).

Webmaster Michael got an interesting email from someone perusing the Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe Outline and Scrapbook:
We have in recent years collected an archive on the East Anglian Fairs of the 1970s/80s. We have just been donated some pictures from Barsham 1975 including a small series featuring George and his 'little princess' ... are busy creating an exhibition at the moment ...

Barsham Faire is where George first met Johnny Melville, which eventually led to Kaboodle and Salatka Balloon Band coming to Amsterdam's Festival of Fools.
There is quite an active group documenting these East Anglian Fairs!

The Old Stables Gallery (Corn Hall) 4-26 August 11am-4pm Mon - Sat FREE From Barsham to Albion –- an archive of material from the East Anglian Fairs of the 70s and 80s

Next year marks 40 years since the first of the legendary East Anglian fairs – which ran from 1972 to 1986 – took place. Their spirit of creativity, play and environmentalism was ahead of its time and has left a legacy today. The fairs became renowned for providing extraordinary theatre, music, installation art, artisan stalls and other entertainments, helping to establish the careers of many who have gone on to play an important part in the cultural life of Britain. The Corn Hall is celebrating these great happenings with an exhibition of posters, photographs, film, and assorted memorabilia from the fairs, including the ultimate monthly newspaper of alternative East Anglia, the Waveney Clarion. This exhibition will evoke memories for those who were there and will explain the magic and significance of the fairs to those who missed them.

Inter-related company Buchinger's Boot Theatre is appearing at Glastonbury Festival 22nd to the 26th June. Glastonbury reportedly sold 150,000 tickets at €200 in four hours without announcing the line-up -- plus 35,000 people are working there. That's something in THIS economy!
My friend John Kilby will linger in England until July -- then on to the festival Villeneuve En Scène with BBT. They're developing an adult show called Petrology for next year.

Oh My HECK! -- Webmaster Michael Is Back From THERE!

The 004 CD Release Party was one of those legendary, fabulous get-togethers on a perfect day in The Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake. Quite a few people from KRCL-FM were on hand to celebrate creativity and diversity. WM Michael was even interviewed briefly, after John Reese and Scott Simons, on that great community radio station during Saturday afternoon's Smile Jamaica, the Reggae show. He spoke about the fabulous SKA/Dance band, and it's talented support staff, like Steve McC, Stephen F, and Elaine M -- Buy the 004 CD HERE!

Uh Oh: From Asbury (New Jersey) Park Press: Plainfield music legend George Clinton has been hospitalized with an infection, but there are indications he'll be ready to funk again soon. “George Clinton is in the hospital,” read a posting on the George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic Facebook page. “He went in for a routine check up and they kept him to treat an infection. He will be just fine. Thank you for all your prayers and concern. We will post more information as it becomes available. Please do not worry.” Attempts to reach representatives of Clinton, 69, for more information about the hospitalization have been unsuccessful. “The funk will survive, just like it always does,” tweeted Clinton Friday morning. However, the George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic show scheduled for Friday night at Joey Harrison's Surf Club in Ortley Beach has been postponed ...
Word from the band is that George's next P-Funk gig is BB King's in New York City at the end of May!

Spring Is Causing An Outbreak Of Fun!

Buster Keaton's masterpiece The General -- with music by Gregg Moore.

(BTW -- I knew the founder of this school, Carlo Mazzone-Clementi. He was an absolutely wonderful man who LOVED life and Commedia!)

Filmed in 1926, 'The General' is often cited as one of the best comedies of all time. Orson Welles, whose own 'Citizen Kane' often gets credit for 'the greatest film of all time' personally considered Keaton's masterpiece worthy of that honor. 'The General' captures Keaton at the height of his powers as one of the greatest physical comedians ever.

'Music for 'The General' is a concert of live, original music set to the action of the Buster Keaton masterpiece. The program was the result of a commission in 2002 from the Cine Clube de Covilhã, a group of cinema enthusiasts in the university town of Covilhã Portugal for a festival of silent film with live music.

An hour and a quarter of music describe the madcap, rough and tumble action of the film and reflect a wide variety of compositional influences from parlor songs evocative of mid 19th century America to angular late 20th century experimentalism and improvisation. Military marches a la Hannes Eisler and Kurt Weill, love songs, cartoon music, the film music of Ennio Morricone, Danny Elfman and Nino Rota and the circus qualities inherent in Klezmer music are all channeled to musically animate this product of the cinematic genius of Buster Keaton.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors and can be reserved online at www.dellarte.com or by phone at 707.668.5663.

Gene Fowler’s biography of John Barrymore, Good Night Sweet Prince, is rightly criticized for telling some stories somewhat taller than the truth, but there is still a lot of wit and color between its covers. One story about the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 goes something like this: Barrymore was romancing Isadora Duncan, but was driven out of his hotel by the quake. The U.S. Army took charge, and enlisted able-bodied men like himself to help with the labor needed to save lives during the fire and chaos of the aftermath.
His family back east was worried, and were glad to get a telegram from another person who’d seen him in San Francisco, relaying his story to them. Some of the family wondered if they could trust the good news, but Ethel Barrymore reportedly said (parphrasing further) -- He’s chasing a woman out of town, it takes an act of God to get him out of bed in the morning, and the army to make him work — it’s Jack alright!

Available Jelly emerged from the Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe when this American group of clowns, dancers, mimes and musicians visited Amsterdam in the mid-seventies to perform at the ‘Festival of Fools’. The musicians stayed on, and a number of line-up changes later the group has developed into a constant feature of the Dutch improvised music scene ... The current Available Jelly has been together since 1995 and brings together an all-star line-up ... The group has recorded five CDs so far.

Nouveau Clowns In Concert:

Jango Edwards and the Fools Militia in collaboration with The Nouveau Clown Institute and Rai-art present a special limited engagement of “THE CABARET CABRON”. Each Saturday evening of the first 3 weekends in February at Roca Umbert Fabrica de les Arts in Granollers and the last weekend of February in Rai art, C/ Carders 12, principle, Barcelona the N.C.I. under the supervision of Jango Edwards will present 6 unique cabaret productions featuring a cast selected from over 15 international artists attending the “N.C.I. Comic Formulas Master Class.”

The Nouveau Clown Institute presents "Tips and Tools for Accessing the International Performing Art -- a unique seminar presented by David Berga
WHO: The seminar is designed as a catalyst to assist emerging artists/companies in developing or expanding their global foundation and international marketing. Aspiring young artists, new companies and established ones encountering recurrent problems finding their way out there will benefit from his shared experience and the advice Mr. Berge offers.
